The Darkest Evening of the YearThe Darkest Evening of the Year by Dean Koontz
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Audible Audiobook

Plot. Amy is the dedicated owner/founder of a golden retriever rescue organization. Hair-raising rescues and a past that involves not only Amy and her partner Brian but an abused victim of Downs Syndrome, Brian’s daughter. Murder and evil, good guys and bad guys, and a full dose of the Dean Koonz’s trademark: magical golden retrievers.

There are three characters in this story named Nikie. One is a golden retriever that died when Amy was in her teens living as an orphan, one Nikkie is a child that died at age 4, and one more Nikkie is a golden retriever that Amy rescues today. The connections will become apparent as each “Nikkie” is revealed through the pages of The Darkest Evening of the Year.

There are magical elements of hope, faith, and dogs. No sex, no objectionable language, narration, and production are fine.

Written by Dean Koontz, narrated by Kirsten Kairos, 9 hours of listening in unabridged audiobook format, and released in November 2007 by Random House Audio.
